30% of UK Businesses Now Use AI Technologies October 2026: What Kent SMEs Must Do to Close the Adoption Gap

October 15, 2026 Meridian Micro
It's Time for TED

The Office for National Statistics has released new data showing that
around 3 in 10 (30%) of all businesses reported using at least one type of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in September 2026, with the proportion steadily increasing since the question was introduced in September 2023 (9%)
. For Kent SMEs still evaluating whether to invest in AI tools, these figures confirm that adoption is accelerating rapidly across UK business—and falling behind could mean losing competitive advantage.

The gap between larger and smaller businesses remains significant.
Around half (51%) of businesses with 100 or more employees reported adopting at least one AI technology
in September 2026, whilst
only 29% of businesses with fewer than 10 employees reported using AI technologies
. This adoption gap presents both a challenge and an opportunity for Kent SMEs to differentiate themselves from competitors who have yet to embrace AI-powered tools.

Which AI Technologies UK Businesses Are Actually Using

The ONS data provides useful insight into practical AI deployment.
The most frequently used AI technologies by businesses with 10 or more employees were text generation using large language models (21%) and visual content creation (19%)
. These are accessible, cloud-based tools that don’t require extensive technical infrastructure—precisely the type of AI adoption that makes sense for most Kent SMEs.

Text generation tools can help with drafting emails, creating marketing content, summarising documents, and responding to customer enquiries. Visual content creation AI assists with social media graphics, presentations, and marketing materials. Both offer immediate productivity gains without requiring businesses to rebuild their IT systems.

AI Is Affecting Administrative and Clerical Roles First

Of businesses with 10 or more employees that reported using AI technologies in September 2026, 38% reported that administrative and clerical roles were the most affected; this is an increase of 3 percentage points from June 2026 and 9 percentage points since this question was introduced in December 2025
. For Kent SMEs, this signals where to focus initial AI pilots: routine administrative tasks that consume significant staff time.

Administrative processes such as appointment scheduling, data entry, invoice processing, document filing, and basic customer service queries are areas where AI tools can deliver measurable time savings. Rather than replacing staff, these tools typically allow team members to focus on higher-value work that requires human judgement and relationship skills.

As we’ve discussed in our coverage of Shadow AI risks for UK SMEs, unmanaged AI adoption can create security and compliance gaps. The ONS data confirms AI use is spreading rapidly, making proper governance essential.

What Kent SMEs Must Do Before Adopting AI Technologies

Assess Your Data Readiness

AI tools are only as good as the data they work with. Before deploying AI, Kent businesses should ensure their data is organised, accessible, and accurate. Poor data quality will produce poor AI outputs, wasting time and creating frustration. Review your current systems: are customer records up to date? Is information stored consistently? Can the right people access the data they need?

Start with a Specific, Measurable Use Case

Rather than attempting broad AI transformation, identify one time-consuming administrative task that could benefit from automation. Measure current performance—how many hours per week does this task consume?—then pilot an AI tool and measure the difference. This approach builds confidence and demonstrates ROI before expanding AI use.

Establish Clear Governance and Security Controls

With
the proportion using AI steadily increasing since the question was introduced in September 2023
, Kent SMEs cannot afford to deploy AI tools without proper oversight. Establish policies covering which AI tools are approved, what data can be processed through them, how outputs should be verified, and who is accountable for AI-related decisions.

Many of the security fundamentals we’ve covered in our posts on phishing defence and cyber security skills gaps apply equally to AI adoption. Staff need training not just on how to use AI tools, but on the risks of sharing sensitive data with external AI platforms.

Focus on Cloud-Based, Accessible Solutions

The AI technologies showing strongest adoption—text generation and visual content creation—are typically cloud-based software-as-a-service tools that require minimal IT infrastructure. For Kent SMEs without dedicated IT teams, this makes AI adoption far more practical than attempting to build custom AI systems in-house.

Look for AI tools that integrate with your existing software (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, your CRM system) rather than requiring staff to learn entirely new platforms. The easier the tool is to incorporate into existing workflows, the more likely your team will actually use it.

Ensure Compliance with UK Data Protection Requirements

When using AI tools that process customer data, personal information, or commercially sensitive content, Kent businesses must ensure compliance with UK GDPR and data protection standards. Not all AI platforms are equal in their data handling practices. Verify where data is processed, how long it’s retained, whether it’s used to train AI models, and what security controls are in place.

Our Cyber Essentials certification support can help Kent SMEs establish the foundational security controls that underpin safe AI adoption.

The Competitive Risk of Delaying AI Adoption

The ONS data demonstrates that AI adoption has more than tripled across UK businesses in just three years. For Kent SMEs, the question is no longer whether to adopt AI, but how quickly and safely to do so. Competitors who successfully deploy AI in administrative functions will operate more efficiently, respond to customers faster, and allocate staff time more strategically.

The good news is that the AI tools showing strongest adoption—text generation and visual content creation—are accessible to businesses of all sizes. Unlike previous technology shifts that required substantial capital investment, cloud-based AI tools are typically priced on subscription models that scale with usage.

How Meridian Micro Supports Kent SMEs with AI Readiness
